Taboom hosts week-long workshop on Media Advocacy for LGBTQI+ Equality in Sub-Saharan Africa

In January 2021, Taboom Media hosted its first-ever week-long Media Advocacy for LGBTQI+ Equality workshop. The Zoom workshop brought together more than 30 activists, regional trainers, and guest speakers from Angola, Botswana, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Eswatini, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, South Africa, Uganda, Zambia, and Zimbabwe.

This week-long regional workshop model builds on the many day-long country-specific media engagement workshops we have hosted for civil society groups in Kenya, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, and Zimbabwe in recent years.

Participants used the opportunity to create media advocacy strategies and campaigns that will further advance LGBTQI+ equality in their countries and regions. They also wrote and delivered their “stories of change”, which we plan to edit and publish as part of an anthology in the coming months.

This training was made possible through generous support from the Arcus Foundation, and the National Endowment for Democracy.
